Since having the coil fitted, my periods have basically been flipped on their head. They come late, heavy and painful. Not exactly ideal, but they are definitely getting better.
As you will know if you've been reading my posts for a while, I am all about the menstrual cup (You can read more about that here), but since having the coil (IUD), the first two days of my period are so heavy that I'm having to constantly change it or just deal with leaking through. Not great when you are in the middle of a busy shift at work and you just feel the *drop*.
You know what I'm talking about.
So after two cycles of having to constantly wash blood out of my underwear and sheets, I decided that enough was enough. I already had a reusable sanitary towel from Earthwise, but I just didn't like the feeling of having that extra layer, almost like you are wearing an adult nappy. Pre-menstrual cup, I was an avid Tampon wearer, so pads are not amongst my favourite products. So, I started to research underwear that you could wear on your period.
After a lot of looking around on the internet, it seemed that there were two options that were the most popular. THINX and Modibodi.
Both have a wide range of styles and fits to flatter and suit all shapes, but one thing that probably influenced my decision the most was price. Whilst, I have been following THINX for a while, when I looked to buy a pair of their sport pants, the total came to £32.56 including postage. Jeez. They might be pretty, but paying £32 for a pair of pants seemed a wee bit extortionate for someone with my budget.
So I looked at ModiBodi. Not only are they cheaper (£26.50 including postage), they also offer 10% student discount. Still not cheap, but I after realising I would save around £10 including the discount, I decided to go for it.
I chose the Seam-free Bikini pair, and a couple days later they arrived. I was pretty impressed from the get go; Comfy as hell, super flattering and they didn't feel much different to a normal pair of pants. Sweet. All I had to do now was wait for my period to come back around.
Two weeks later, it was time to test out these bad boys.
For the first test, I wore them with my menstrual cup, on the heaviest day of my period. Coincidentally, I was also at work all day that day so wouldn't have many opportunities to change the cup. Thanks Vagina.
By midday, I could feel myself starting to leak. Fantastic, time to put Modibodi to the test. After getting over the initial panic when feeling that *drop*, I found that it was fine. My day carried on as normal and I didn't worry about it. I didn't feel wet, or like I was wearing a nappy, the pants just collected the blood and I was able to get through my day with no problems!
The only issue is then that night, I had to clean them in order to wear them again. As per the instructions, I rinsed them out first with cold water, and was ~shook~ at the amount of blood that was coming out. Staring in wonder at how these pants could carry that much and not let it leak out onto my clothes. But now they were drying, I had to hope that my Mooncup could hold out through the night until the next day.
This is where having another pair would have been useful, as I do tend to be quite heavy in the first few nights. This was unavoidable seeing as I only bought the one pair, but all in all, having them made my period sooo much easier. I didn't have to worry about leaking, because the pants are literally DESIGNED to sort that out! I'm planning to buy another pay when I get paid, and my periods will hopefully be easier, and a lot less messier from here on out!
Maybe I'll try and save for A THINX pair.....
I would definitely recommend these to anyone who is thinking about changing up their period in a more sustainable way. Whether you can't use Tampons/Menstrual cups, or simply want to try something new, these may be your solution. They are comfy, reusable, easy to clean and a pretty good addition to my Earth - Friendly period collection!
Enjoy a lil booty wiggle, in some earth friendly pants ;)
