How to Stand the Test of Time.

Opinions change, times change. Your work however may not. What is politically correct now, could be offensive in ten years and most of the time, there isn't much that you can do about it. But there are some tips that may prove useful, should you ever find yourself in this situation.

  1. Adapt. Don’t think you can write in that format? Write it anyway. Being able to adapt and change your medium is going to be so damn helpful. If it doesn't work as a book, it could work as a film or even a radio play. You never know so keep trying.

  2. Consider if you need to switch up your platforms in order to bring you work to the right audience. Is everyone moving to Instagram? Over you go. Does your audience live in old theatres? You may be a little rusty but go get up on that stage. Trust me.

  3. Try not to be: racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, classist etc etc. Usually, this should leave you in good stead.

  4. Keep your writing diverse. The real world is diverse and so your work should be. Look at the people around you. Are they all white, straight men? I highly doubt it, so write characters that people will find themselves in. Unless the entire point is that the evil race is a group of Aryan men, then go ahead.

  5. Keep going. Keep learning. Times change and people should change with them. School yourself. Don't wait for someone to call you out to apologise and change; be the change.

  6. Spoken word will never die. You still read the travels of Odysseus and the fall of Troy, even thousands of years in the present. Words whispered around fires and belted on stage have a tendency to linger and be retold until they become their own being.

At the end of the day, someone somewhere might find your work offensive. This could be from something as little as having the word "wine" uttered on the page, or daring to place a Bisexual character at the forefront. Either way, you can do your best to make your work stick around.

It may not stay everywhere, but you know that you can make it a story to last through the ages.
